Greenway maps: Thoughts?

Greenway maps: Thoughts?

Making progress, slowly, on the GGNC greenway project. Between the nont-so-friendly-for-greenway-mapping weather and and my ineptitude with technology, well, it’s not a good combination for progress. I do have a prototype ready for your scrutiny, however.
My plan is to focus initially on longer greenways that connect with other longer greenways to make much longer greenways. [...]

Running barefoot: Dipping your toe

Running barefoot: Dipping your toe

There’s nothing like good news from the scientific community to spur interest in a given exercise: We’re all open to the latest magic bullet when it comes to getting in shape or improving performance. We’re even more susceptible when that magic bullet includes the promise of health minus hurt. Which is why a study appearing [...]

The barefoot runner: Coming in from the cold

The barefoot runner: Coming in from the cold

In the midst of Saturday’s snow and ice storm, Jon Hayden of Holly Springs went for an 18-mile run wearing a pair of $5 water shoes from Walmart. The water shoes, a thin glove of rubber and mesh intended for a hot summer day at the beach, were a concession: Hayden, a marathoner, prefers to [...]

Saved by the Groundhog

Saved by the Groundhog

The kids are home from school — again — and the prospects for them going back tomorrow aren’t so swell, either. The snow that kept them entertained the past three days has either melted or turned to ice. It’s cloudy, dreary, you’re staring at one another like members of the Donner party probably did. Dealing with disappointment

Dealing with disappointment

I wanted to surf, but grew up a thousand miles from the nearest ocean. I wanted to be a synchronized swimmer, but the only guys who did it were these two. I wanted to play pro football, but my hair hurt when I took off the helmet. So I did other things. Things that a [...]

Winter as it happens! @ JoeAGoGo!

Winter as it happens! @ JoeAGoGo!

Everyone in the Triangle is atwitter over the looming winter weather event, which, according to whom you’re listening, could bring rain, a dusting, enough snow to cancel a planned trucking in of snow to Cary’s Bond Park, enough snow to make Vancouver envious. And we’re atwitter as well, meaning you can follow the advance of [...]

Sled (& ski) the Triangle

Sled (& ski) the Triangle

I’m a sucker for a good snow forecast, and far more often than not I get burned. But on the off-chance the current forecast for a major winter weather event in the Triangle holds true, I would be remiss not to share some of the best places to take your boogie board on Saturday and [...]

Four carrots to get you to spring

Four carrots to get you to spring

I love carrots, crave them. Couldn’t press on without ‘em. If I can’t envision a carrot in the distance, I’m hard pressed to roll out of bed and go for an early morning run or ride, let alone in 20-degree weather. So today, a few carrots to motivate you through the cold challenge of winter.
Tame [...]
