What is the Million Step March all about?
The Million Step March is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina’s newest statewide wellness initiative focused on promoting the benefits of physical activity. We'll accomplish that goal by walking all the way from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The Million Step March begins April 1 in Asheville and will finish by mid-June in Wilmington.
Who is walking?
Kathy Higgins, vice president of Community Relations at BCBSNC and president of the BCBSNC Foundation, will lead the way, along with Gary Marino, who walked from Florida to Boston to raise awareness about the importance of walking. Several BCBSNC medical directors will join us at times, too. We’ll have other BCBSNC employees walking parts of the route with us.
Can I participate in the Million Step March?
There are many ways you can participate:
- Come walk with us. Track our progress each day using the route map on our Web site at www.betterhealthnc.com.
- Join the Million Step March Challenge at www.betterhealthnc.com, log the number of steps you take and you’ll be entered to win prizes.
- Read our blog from the road and submit your comments, suggestions and thoughts.
- Attend a Million Step March event, listed on our events page at www.betterhealthnc.com. All across the state, we'll talk with the general public, customers, employer groups, media and our own employees about how to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine.
How can I find the team and walk with them?
Each day we’ll record Gary’s starting point on the map on our Web site. The listing will include a starting location for a particular date. We’ll list larger events ahead of time, and plot those on the map.
Is the Million Step March coming to my area?
Check out our event listings and you can see if Gary is coming to your town.
What time does the team start marching each day?
Weather and traffic permitting, walking will typically commence each morning between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Times for events along the walk are also approximate.
