Agency: Council on Aging of Buncombe County, Inc.

Project: COA-SrsActivityandHealthyFood

Description:

Mission: The Council on Aging of Buncombe County is dedicated to assisting and linking senior adults and their families with information, services, and opportunities that promote and enhance quality of life.

Program Overview: This project will be a partnership between the Council on Aging of Buncombe County and the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, as it aims to promote health and wellness through physical activity, increasing access for seniors to local, healthy foods, and supporting local farmers. We will create safe designated walking routes to the downtown farmers’ tailgate markets primarily for the downtown Asheville senior population. This will include improved sidewalks for ease of walking and accessibility for persons with disabilities. We will also develop signage to designate these routes and create a map to be distributed to the downtown senior housing buildings, downtown businesses, the Asheville Visitors Center, and other outlets. The map will be available online at both the Council on Aging of Buncombe County and the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project’s websites. Four tailgate market locations are downtown, including the new Asheville City Market, with over 100 vendors.
